Sensors recognize if a person is wearing a face mask, compliant with COVID-19 requirements


COVID-19 has changed our daily life and continues to do so. One such instance is the reopening of stores and public institutes like museums, libraries, etc., which are now linked with new regulations. A basic provision is to compel customers and/or visitors to wear face masks and the accompanying obligation to check for customer/visitor compliance. 

  • Static signage (e.g. a poster) and accountability of customers/visitors are a must
  • At the end of the day, nobody knows how effective these measures actually are 
  • In a worst-case scenario, additional staff is needed to guard doors


The Xovis all-in-one solution

Technical Data

An AI-enabled sensor running firmware version 4.4.0 or later is required for the Face Mask Detection plugin. The AI firmware runs on the following sensor models:

  • Activate the license on each sensor by adding the ID “PIFMD” 
  • Use the free 30-day evaluation to test the plugin 
  • Purchase an unlimited license code or use a recurring license through the Xovis Cloud   

  • Object stream, Event stream, Coordinate push and Event push: each one lets you know whether a track/object ID is masked or not 
  • WebUI visualization depending on privacy level  

  • Reduced mounting height range (see table) in order to have a good angle for viewing faces 
  • Unfavorable lighting (too dark or too bright) limits accuracy
  • Thermally challenging setups, such as direct sunlight on the sensor or direct mounting on isolating materials like plaster ceilings, etc., can lead to a lowered operation mode 
  • Potentially reduced performance when combined with other plugins in very crowded settings
