A surge in passenger numbers at North American airports in the lead-up to and during mega sporting events had terminal operators seeking solutions to overcome capacity constraints. The risk of overcrowding at mission-critical terminal touchpoints, such as security, and the threat it posed to passenger satisfaction led many operators to real-time passenger flow management solutions. Xovis showcased one such solution at the Passenger Terminal Expo (PTE) 2025 in Madrid.

Airports worldwide are bracing for an influx of passengers, placing unprecedented pressure on operations. At PTE 2025, Xovis will demonstrate how its cutting-edge technology can help airports handle the massive increase in passenger traffic expected during two of the world’s largest sporting events—the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics—and how it is used every day to help enhance the passenger experience.

"Managing the expected surge in airport passengers requires advanced, real-time insights into passenger behavior and flow. Xovis’ solution empowers airports with the tools to anticipate passenger demand and effectively use existing human and infrastructure resources to prevent congestion and delays," said Xovis CEO Christian Studer. “At PTE 2025, we will show how our people flow management system plays a pivotal role in ensuring the success of these global sporting events and the day-to-day operations of airports globally.”

Based on purpose-built technology, Xovis' fully managed Passenger Flow Management System is already used by +110 airports—including many of the cities where World Cup matches will take place. Airport operators concerned that resource constraints put terminal operations at risk rely on the Xovis system—powered by the most advanced machine-learning-based algorithms—to optimize staff and infrastructure allocation, increase throughput, and reduce time passengers spend in line.

“Xovis has recently achieved remarkable breakthroughs in automatic queue detection and management, setting new standards for accuracy even in highly complex queuing environments. But we also have 15 years of experience working closely with airports, so we also have an advanced suite of tools operators can use to make the most of the data captured by our AI-powered sensors,” Xovis CPO Florian Eggenschwiler said.

Growing demand for accurate, actionable data will be a central theme at PTE 2025, as stakeholders from across the aviation industry come together to discuss how best to manage rising passenger numbers in the coming decade. Xovis’ presence at this strategic event underscores the company’s commitment to helping airports stay ahead of the curve, ensuring both operational efficiency and a better passenger experience.
